This is my second pair of these, the first were the mid 70’s version of these with a slightly different cabinet (smaller) and the woofers look marginally different. They both have the Foster (Fostex) horn tweeters and these have Rola Alnico woofers with treated cloth surrounds. Not cheap components by any means. These fall into the HIDDEN GEM category and the only reason they don’t get the love they deserve is the Zenith name. Like RCA known more for their colour TV’s than anything. There is a significant departure however when it comes down to vintage audio, Zenith really had something, especially with the Allegro speaker line.
These are quite heavy and solid. I did a small restore to these. Lacquered the cabinets, painted the paper cones (black the others were an olive green and slightly stained) the grills are in reasonably good repair and the badges are present. There is a tweeter crossover adjustment and it does work. I tested these out at 12 o’clock but turned it up just to check it out and if you max it and you like lots of highs, don’t be afraid to turn it up, it’s not harsh.
Check out the reviews on these, the names Advent and Klipsch appear more than once. I have a pair of Advent Bullnose and that’s a pretty accurate assessment when comparing these to another brand. These stack up really well to others in the floor standing speaker category. Come and check them out you’ll be quite surprised.
Replaced a few of the thumb screws that had fallen off (see last photo) there are now 4 on each.
