Definition of a matched pair of power tubes
What is the general consensus on power tube matching.
How do you define a "matched pair" (or quad)? If they are tested for transconductance, is that enough?
Matching does not truly apply to cosmetics, same dates codes, although it sure don't hurt either!
It is the output power tubes we refer to as when matched (smaller single driver tubes need not be match yet nice is so,.
But output tubes will sound best when they are within a few wee mA of each
Plate/cathode current within 5mA is close enough.
Matched transconductance within 2% to 10% is a bonus.
Even as high as 7 to 10 mA out usually works fine.
However 7mA is probably the biggest difference in pairs/quads being sold as matched.
This being the acceptable difference before it's no longer accurate to call them a matched.
Trying EL84's that were 10ma apart was/is a problem!
Either one tube would be biased too cold (harsh sounding)
or one would be red-plating all the time or some of both!
Doing the math its with lower dissapation tubes that 10 ma is too much
but 7ma is doable.
With higher wattage bulbs 10 ma is easily doable.
You can get certain output tubes to fall within 50-70% 12 ma apart
With tubes, like EL84s or 6V6s, that are supposed to be biased around 20 mA, a 10mA difference would be a problem.
In 6L6s and EL34s it's not as much of a problem.
Lastly, please keep an open mind; NOTHING ongoing with regular use is going to stay perfectly matched!
A perfectly matched pair today won't be perfectly matched after a few hundred hours of operation.
Many vintage 1950 -60's tubes still some 50 to 60 years later still do show excellent test results within less than 5%
