VINTAGE 1960's AUDIO TUBES Introduction
Uber-Rare Amperex Holland Organ Grade 12AX7 ECC83 (1965)
Vintage Amperex organ grade 12AX7 / ECC83 made by Amperex, made in Holland, .
You will never find better 12AX7A, these are authentic Amperex, these are matched, date codes: I63 delta0E. These are ribbed plates, with halo getter,
They test over 95% and sound fabulous!
These are probably the rarest of the Amperex made in Holland line of 12AX7 vacuum tubes:
This tube was made in the Heerlen, Holland Philips/Amperex factory that made the Bugle Boy tubes. However, these special tooled tubes received extensive aftermarket screening for low noise and low microphonics, plus uniform output from each triode.
They were used in EKG and ECG machines, and tube noise could not be allowed as it would invalidate the test results. In music amplification, these tubes sound superb.
The music emerges out of a black background of silence, and the sonics are three dimensional. It will outperform about every other 12AX7 ever made!
Beautiful break up when used in the V1 position in guitar amps, with a sweet tone that has to be heard to be believed.
These tubes test very strong as NOS unused at:
Tube 1: 97-97
Tube 2: 98/95
Tube 3: 99/97
Tube 4: 98/99
Tested on our B+K 747 tube tester where 50 is minimum good.
1965 Philips Amperex branded for Electrohome 12AX7
They needed to be the best, so they used Amperex Holland 12AX7’s that were made for the most critical applications. Silk screening is intact on all tubes!
We have just (4) of these tubes still left available now...

There are matched pairs of Phillips Amperex branded Electrohome 12AX7 tubes made in the Herleen plant in Holland
They have 15mm plates, small halo getters and 4 top seams.
Amperex was an American company that re-labeled tubes from many sources. Many were from Heerlan, Holland (with a delta-shaped factory etch code)
The Bugle Boys 12AX7 were made in the Heerlan factory.
There were at least five different distinct variations of that tube type, depending on the date of manufacturing.
These tubes have most quiet, low noise distinct sonic characteristics!
These Philips Amperex Electrohome tubes are the exact same make / design / formula as the Amperex Bugle Boys with the mullard flash
Most are quite amazed with their sonic musical attributes

It's probably one of the most misunderstood things about vacuum tubes:
The name on the tube is the company that made it right?
Well actually the answer is No - and that's why it can be so confusing.
The tube making giants of the 1940's, 50's and 60's were:
Amperex / GE ( General Electric) Mullard / Philips / RCA / Sylvania / Westinghouse to name some but certainly not all.
While it's true that they made tubes with their company name on the glass - the bulk of their production was devoted to making tubes under contract for other companies.
Remember the Zenith TV your family had in the living room back in the 70's?
All the tubes inside were labelled Zenith and Only Replace with Genuine Zenith Tubes.
Brilliant marketing but somewhat deceiving since Zenith didn't make tubes.
They bought them in bulk from GE and Sylvania and the supply contracts required that the tubes were labelled Zenith.
The public didn't know that - it made sense to replace a Zenith tube with a Zenith tube. Zenith knew that other brands could be used instead but they were protecting their repeat business.
This is just one example - multiply it by the 100's of other companies making TV's, organs, radio receivers, amplifiers, medical / test equipment and you can see how confusing this became.
All those different names on the glass but still only a handful of companies making tubes.
So how do you know who made a tube?
Learn to read the production codes - not the brand names.
Each tube will have markings which show two things - the company that made it and when it was made.
Once you learn these codes it makes tube identification easy and allows you to find good deals. There are a lot of good resources on the web that will teach you about production / date codes
G.E. 6201/12AT7/ECC81 tubes
RCA (USA) 12AT7/ECC81 tubes
Also have several 12AX7 tubes made by Philips Amperex: some labelled for Rogers or Electrohome and the 1st one as an Amperex Bugle Boy. Guess what?
They all sound the same. Why?
Because they were made on the same assembly line, using the same materials and method of construction and with the same testing afterwards. If Amperex made the tube it's going to sound like an Amperex tube.
Just like scotch tastes like scotch regardless if it was packaged in the familiar bottles or a glass mason jar.
The only difference is the tube on the far left will sell for double the price - because it has the Bugle Boy logo. We've been brought up to think that the label on the outside is the most important factor and that simply isn't the case.
The label means nothing - who made the tube is what your ears hear.
The Philips Amperex 12AX7 that have someone else's name branded on the glass such as Electrohome, but still will give you all the great sound you'd expect from these companies.
Thanks for your time - hope you've found this helpful!
