The Traveler’s Book of Color Photography by Phillips & Thomas Introduction
The Traveler’s Book of Color Photography by Van Phillips & Owen Thomas - Fourth Printing 1972 - missing the dustjacket and there is a bit of wear to the cover corners but otherwise in very good condition - no missing pages, writing or dogears.
In their introduction, the authors explain that each color photograph in the book, "...could have been taken by any amateur with a very simple camera. ... When you use your camera the main things you need to decide are: what to take, when to take it, where to take it from. The purpose of this book is to help you to develop this kind of judgement quickly and easily." The books succeeds - and then some!
The authors focus on 40 aspects of photography, including framing the picture, evening light, candid photography, putting the center of interest off center ("rule of thirds"), and finding a fresh angle to a overly photographed sight. Each of the 40 sections is rich with photographs (a total of 400) accompanied by extensive captions that give insight into what makes each photograph work. Many have helpful tips, such as the one accompanying a wonderful photograph of a child licking a huge lollipop: "The simplicity of childhood is best conveyed by a simple setting. We chose a low angle to isolate her against the sky and avoid a fussy amusement park background."
