From February 1937 to October 1971, LOOK
magazine offered its readers "the exciting story of peo-
ple, what they do, what they feel, what they think"-
the credo formulated by its publisher, Gardner Cowles.
THE LOOK BOOK is a lavishly illustrated anthology pre-
senting the triumphant, the tragic, the humorous, the
sometimes near-magical story of people's lives. Through
essays, captions, and hundreds of exceptional pictures,
THE LOOK BOOK opens diverse windows onto the
events of the past four decades by spotlighting the
many aspects that have affected our destiny, from sci-
ence, history, religion, and politics to the lively and
the fine arts, gastronomy, manners and morals, and
the sexes.
LOOK's greatest contribution to journalism was
undoubtedly its photographs, and THE LOOK BOOK
includes the most memorable-pictures that leave a
haunting impact on the reader long after the page has
been turned. Such impact could only be evoked by
great photographers, whom LOOK had in abundance:
Douglas Jones, Michael Vaccaro, Charlotte Brooks,
Paul Fusco, Arthur Rothstein, to name but a few of
the staff members. When LOOK hired free-lancers, they
hired the greatest: Richard Avedon, Arnold Newman.
Archie Lieberman, Yousuf Karsh, Lord Snowdon (a
frequent contributor), and David Douglas Duncan.
Gardner Cowles, LOOK's publisher, was not only im-
passioned by the visual: he felt he owed it to his read-
ers to appeal to their intellect and humor as well. Thus,
THE LOOK BOOK is filled not only with the best in pho-
tographs, but it also includes contributions from the
greatest writers in their fields: C. P. Snow, William
Saroyan, Bertrand Russell, Norman Mailer, John
Gunther, Margaret Mead, Julian Huxley, Ogden Nash,
Leo Rosten, Marshall McLuhan, in addition to such
special stars as Jackie Robinson, and Groucho Marx.
THE LOOK BOOK is more than simply a collection
of memorable photographs and articles. It is a probing,
searching, vital, often deliciously funny "story of peo-
ple, beautifully designed and dramatically told. Leo
Rosten-for more than fifteen years Special Editorial
Adviser to the staff of LOOK-and Gardner Cowles
have given generously of their time and talents. Their
efforts have been amply repaid, for if there is one over-
riding feeling communicated in this volume it is one
of vitality-a stunningly infectious human vitality. - from the dust jacket
