Bike has... a belt drive and internally geared eight-speed hub drivetrain. the front rack is balanced by an aggressively swept handlebar that delivered us to destinations with fleet handling, especially helpful in fast-moving traffic, even when we strapped on a heavy load. [ Beyond Rare: Patrick Dempsey's Custom Roll 8 ] 1: The frame is built with two grades of Reynolds steel. The bike is smooth on rough roads and tough enough to survive city streets, yet it still lets you sprint through yellow lights. 2: Globe’s Porteur rack, available as an accessory for other models, comes standard. It carries 22 pounds and offers many options for securing cargo. A heavy load over the front wheel can require extra muscle to maneuver, but the swept bar’s leverage offsets the weight. 3: The standard Roll 8 has a chain-driven eight-speed drivetrain. The Rare is outfitted with a grease-free Gates belt drive—so you’ll keep your clothes clean. A split in the driveside seatstay lets you service the belt, and horizontal dropouts with built-in adjustable stops help align the rear wheel and keep it in place. 4: To create an elegant line all the way from the fork’s crown to the dropouts, Globe used recessed washers to secure the front hub. There’s no quick-release, but a 5mm hex key lets you remove the wheel. 5: Some cyclists buying the Rare will want flat pedals. Others will ride clipless. The stock platforms, with metal cages and leather toe straps, give the Rare a throwback vibe despite modern components. But they’re mostly for show: Riding in anything but cycling-specific flat shoes leaves you with inadequate support.
