Up for sale is a Revox A77 MK3, 4 track 2 channel, standard speed (7 ½ & 3 ¾ ips) Reel to Reel tape deck. This deck doesn’t need an introduction as it’s legendary, however I will mention the amount of work I’ve put into it to bring it up to specs mechanically and electronically. I have rebuilt this deck spending dozens of hours so it will work for another 20 years. I do this as a hobby so my time has zero monetary value and it will not reflect the price, otherwise it’s not sellable. Such is the amount of work needed for any reel deck this age. Deoxing and lubricating is simply not enough.
- Removed all moving mechanical parts, cleaned, greased and adjusted as per the service manual.
- Replaced all electrolytic and tantalum capacitors as well as X2 capacitors (safety reason) on the signal path, power and motors control boards. Only used Nichicon gold and premium audio grade caps in the signal path and high-grade caps like Kemet on the power control boards.
- Replaced capstan and 2x reel motors capacitors.
- Replaced all fuses.
- Removed, cleaned and lubricated the wheel bearings in the capstan and 2x reel motors as well as tape guide.
- Replaced the 2x counter belts with brand new belts and lubricated the counter.
- Replaced all adjustable pots (17 of them) in the signal path, bias and power control boards.
- Replaced VU meter, power and end-of-tape light bulbs.
- Adjusted reel breaks for FF and RW to be gentle on tapes.
- Demagnetized all heads and the tape path.
- Deoxit all switches and potentiometers.
- Adjusted heads azimuth, bias and aligned all 3 heads.
- Adjusted EQ, record level, play level and VU meters as per the service manual using an MRL tape. The operating point is set at 250 nWb/m.
- Adjusted the speed for both speed settings and the operating voltage as specified in the manual.
- Cleaned all knobs and removed all the nasty grime collected by who knows how many owners over the years. The unit has been disinfected thoroughly.
The heads are in very good condition with many years of daily use left in them before they can be re-lapped for more years.
The pinch roller is in excellent condition.
The unit is in good shape esthetically.
I can demo the deck only to serious buyers. It comes with a brand new power cable and dust cover. NO hubs or tapes are included.
I’ve biased the deck for Maxell UD tapes for recording purposes. I can bias it for any other tape if you provide the tape you’re planning to use for recording.
Price is $1,200.
