My initial impression are wow, this is intense. The sound feels very in your face, but in a good way. They beg you to listen to everything. The response is what you would expect, very flat, very large. The lows impress me, they are sharp and even. It's very awesome to listen to." "Hol..leeee #@$$. These are better sounding than my Stax SR-5's !" "On a recent thrift store raid, I found a set of Audio Technica AT705 Electret Condenser headphones in wonderful shape. I wasn't expecting much out of them, but I am amazed on how how good they sound." "These are from ca. 1975. The next model lineup came in 1978, with headsets that were much slimmed-down. Your 705 became the ATH-6. The US market got an ATH-7 with a bigger transformer box and different connectors. The ATH-8 was marketed here as the Signet TK 33, with a back-electret capsule (not unlike A-T's microphones). These are all interesting headphones, but if you want to get into electrostatics, you're eventually going to have to try one of the older Stax models, though the old Sony ECR-500, if you can find one, is also a very enjoyable headphone. You'll probably want to read about electret electrostatics over at Head-Fi, since there's a lot of vile gossip about them and the usual caveats relating to anything with high voltage that's 30+ years old. I should say that I have the AT-706 which I find very enjoyable too." "Hahahah..welcome to the world of planar..pretty much the same experience I had too but with the ortho YH-100 pitted against the HD580. The 580 didn't stand a chance" "They image very well and are very revealing." "If you crave the sound of a pair of Stax but can't afford them, these are the best compromise you can afford. I used them with a hot rodded Rogers Cadet III on the 16 0hm speaker taps with very satisfying results." "Picked these up from a fellow just a couple of miles down the road a week or so ago. When I got home, plugged into the speaker outputs of a 5 watt tube amp that was handy. They sounded terrible......like playing through a tin can. Just about wrote them off as a bad buy (didn't pay much for them though, so wasn't too upset). Today, plugged them into a Denon AVR-3600 receiver (110 WPC into 8 ohms) and gave then another shot. WOW!!!! What a difference. These things are power hungry like you would not believe." Review of similar AT-706 model: "They are electret phones from the 70s. I am using my Mits DA-A10DC amp with the provided energizer (Hehe, vintage Japanese setup eh?). I am coming from K701s. -Funny enough... these have WAY more bass vs. the 701s. I cannot really hear volume change all the way down to 20hz. -I cannot comment much on the non extremes of the sound (Mids and such) as they sound very much transparent. I ran a sweep from 20 to 15k, no peaks, no valleys... everything sounded the same volume. -Another large improvement over 701s is the highs... they are so smooth, and go ALL THE WAY with no roll-off. -The sound-stage is, while closer vs the K701, just as wide. I would rather it be a little farther back, but nothing to complain about. Plus crossfeed helps in this regard. -On the sound-stage... it is not quite as big as the 701s. Not really the right words, but basically I think it is because the drivers are not super large in size. This is very much a fair trade though when one considers the pluses. -They are quite comfy. The pads rest on your ears and do not hurt at all (Very soft actually). Headband could use a little more padding but coming from the damned bumpy headband on the 701 this feels nice. -They get quite loud... I do not hear distortion at my usual high volume levels. -Been testing them with every type of music I have... sounds great with everything (trance, classical, metal, pop, soundtrack, etc etc). Mind you these are first impressions and I have not listened to many other cans... but from were I am standing, these are the best thing I have ever heard... they are SO blistering fast (detailed), go sooo low (vs 701s), and are quite neutral" "I CANNOT get over the amount of bass from these little things! It's not rolled off or boomy... just the right amount. This is rather strange since I have read that electrets and even some statics are not the best performers when it comes to bass. The extremely fast response is amazing. So much more to the music then what I was hearing with the 701... and that phone has a quick driver." *********************************************************************************** Local buyer much preferred (cash on pickup); e-transfer is possible, but unpredictable, takes from 1min to 30 min waiting to go through, depending on bank, time of the day and day of the week.
