This hard-to-find heavyweight Matsushita model (lots of metal) shares service manual with the fabulous SL-SW880; this means they are almost the same in and out.
In my experience most of high end 800 and 900 line Panasonic models are far more reliable compared to
Sony or Philips counterparts.
The sound is truly remarkable, fast and wide-open, with a great deal of detail.
Unlike 1992-1997 Panasonic models this one is much more detailed and clear sounding, despite also using a standard MASH processing DAC.
SL-SW861C packs lots of punch in fairly slimline (for Sports model) package.
It feels like a quality heavy duty unit in hand.
Sound quality is 95% as good as that of comparable acclaimed Sony D-421SP, however unlike many Sony this Panasonic never has trouble reading any discs, even badly burnt/scratched.
