The 1180DC is Model 170DC power amp + Model 3250 preamp, all in one chassis.
The 1180DC is an amplifier that produces music, as opposed to 99% of other amplifiers than produce sound.
That's regardless of age and price tag.
Imagine the angelic choir singing in the midst of the storm of millennium, with waves towering to the sky; that's the sound of 1180DC,
As to the Marantz lineage, 1122DC and 1152DC are one thing, and 1180DC and 1300DC are entirely different thing.
You simply cannot compare those 2 categories, because the sound is absolutely different.
Do not even consider 1152DC or 1122DC if you can afford higher end models; the build/circuit is different, and so is the sound.
The 1180DC sounds better than AU-9900, AU-11000 and AU-20000, if that matters to you;
first 2 minutes of auditioning with good speakers and good source will show that clearly.
